So far one of the best catfishing rigs for us has been 'braid line #50 pound test a bullet sinker 1 /8 oz up to 3/4 oz sinker then a swivel tie to'2 feet of 30 pound mono for a leader and-one 5/0 or 6/0 circle hook - - the way I fish this set up is this -If the water is 20 feet deep feed out line till it hits bottom then take up a foot or two bend release tube and set in the planer hole on the planer bobber and motor slowly less than a half mile per hour most times .The bait drags the bottom and rides about 1 to 2 feet off the bottom --I havent got stuck much yet-the rig is pretty snagless in our reservoirs and on the one trip we got to go catfishing on the ohio river It was awesome.also on shallow flats I set the bait down 2 to 3 feet with the same set up -this set up works best at night or in the early spring when the big catfish fish are shallow.
A little about casting your planer bobbers-they are castable with up to 8 feet of line out and set to depth in the hole-longer if you have a longer pole.I stand up on the stearn of the boat seat to get more height -I use a side arm cast with a little upward motion. Planer bobbers don't tangle much on a cast but if they do and land on their top or backwards a little tug or two with your rod tip will flip it and set it in the right direction. with practice you will be able to cast 50 to 75 feet easy. Catfish watch out there's a new flying planer bobber for catfishing.
Get a drift sock for catfishing, -or two-they have more uses than to slow you down for catfishing -use them in rivers to keep the wind from turning the boat to the sides -use them to help keep the boat to left or right to make wind from other directions like cross currents cut over the side of your boat thats more comefortable and out of the wind. you can troll with drift socks out too-they will give you side to side and up down in windy conditions- get them at west marine on line and start drifting for better catfishing,-
Catfishing,Find them fast- I was a hard core catfish jugger before I started planer bobber fishing- I almost always found good catfishing spots with my jugs - -Well planers are a lot like jugs and can move through a area and check for fish better than jugs because you can control where it goes -the speed the direction stop it start it. I used to find new holes by drifting jugs through the area -now I use planers to find good spots by trolling the area -rod goes down theres a spot to fish again- think a spot looks good and could have catfish? Head over cast or drop a planer bobber and send it to do its duty -and it will- Its the same as jugging because its floating at a fixed depth with out a boat around. Its better than jugging cause you can control where it goes and speed - Its the best because when a planer bobber goes down hold on its on your rod.like a jug gets bigger fish because there is not a boat around and the big fish know what a boat is and swim away -Right over to your baited planer bobber where they feed with out fear.- Jugs are at the mercy of the wind-your planer is not- catfishing , it will never be the same. So lets get some nice catfishing with new planer bobbers.

SLIP DRIFT OR WALK THE BAIT IN RIVER CURRENT- This is the most deadly catfishing planer bobber trick for river current. Find a ledge on top of the main channel in a bend of the river. This works on the inside and out side bends too.I found a ledge it was 22 feet deep and 10 feet wide -it was about 25 feet from the bank -the shore was shale and rock steeply slanting into the water-the deep end of the drop off was shear wall that fell in 35 feet of water- the flat was 25 or 35 feet long when I scoped it out on my depth finder I saw a stair step ledge with lots of arches and bait-I anchored up stream and sent the planer bobber to do its duty and man it did. I caught flatheads off the deep ledge with a planer bobber set to go left and nailed channel cats at the same time near the bank with a right side planer set-I used a planer bobber set to the left side to wale on flatheads that were feeding on the drop off-I would work the drop off of the ledge with the planer by letting out line and then stoping the bail closed ,pull forward with my rod and let drift back till it came tight again then I pulled it forward as far as my rod tip would go and drift back again- This was flatheads eating cut bait yep. I fished that ledge till I ran out of bait- and was able to fish it with out recasting simply by using my pole and bail to send the planer all over the place- starting at the head of the ledge working to the inner wall on the down drift and stoping the line the planer would swing out over the ledge and the drop off zig zaging over the whole area till it past the catfish fish zone -If no takers I just slowly reeled up to the top of the catfishing hole and started over-I reeled up slowly and got a few catfish on the trip up to the top too-
Heres a catfishing planer bobber tip. Use a 1/2 or 3/4 oz weedless silver spoon and put a small piece or eel or shad- look at the depth you wish to fish and the area on your depth finder. this time of year cold water moving in river or rowing yes paddle too its quiet and I get bigger fish than most times useing trolling motor- seems like the biguns know what a trolling motor sounds like at least the on off of the motor seems to scare them at times- anyway let out enough line to be in the target depth-the best way to do this is let out till you hit bottom and take it up a crank or two-then set your planer release in at that depth-let out your planer bobber and fish the whole area -if you dont get bit reverse the release and fish the other side of the boat and that area-the spoon is snagless it will take all fish stripers too even with out bait -but the bait seals the deal-good luck heres a old proto type with a shad bait rigged and ready they worked magic then and they are even better now with improvements to the elevens and 7- 11-s
